About Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe our Heritage

Zimbabwe is a country where tradition is not something preserved in the past, it is lived, celebrated, and passed down daily. From ancient stone cities to vibrant community rituals, Zimbabwean culture is deeply rooted in identity, family, and spiritual connection.

Ancient Foundations

The name Zimbabwe itself comes from Great Zimbabwe, a vast and awe-inspiring stone city built between the 11th and 15th centuries. It stands as a symbol of African ingenuity, trade, and civilisation, a reminder that Zimbabwe’s story is one of strength and sophistication long before colonial history.

These ruins are more than historical landmarks; they represent the foundation of a people whose traditions are grounded in pride, resilience, and continuity.

Community & Family

At the heart of Zimbabwean tradition is community. Life is centred around family, elders, and shared responsibility. Respect for elders is a cornerstone of cultural values, and wisdom is passed down through storytelling, proverbs, and lived example.

Ceremonies, whether for birth, marriage, or remembrance are communal events. People gather not just to witness, but to participate, reinforcing the idea that life is shared, not individual.

Spiritual Connection

For generations, spiritual life in Zimbabwe has been shaped by a deep awareness of the unseen, a respect for ancestors as guides and protectors, and a belief that life extends beyond what we can see.

At Play Marimba, we honour this spiritual sensitivity and the reverence it represents. It reflects a people who have always understood that life is more than the physical, that there is a deeper connection beyond ourselves.

Our journey builds on this foundation.

While traditional practices look to ancestors as intermediaries, we have come to place our faith in God as the ultimate source of life, guidance, and truth. This is not a departure from spiritual awareness, but a redirection from many voices to one, from inheritance to relationship.

Through this, we carry forward the heart of Zimbabwean spirituality, reverence, connection, and meaning while anchoring it in a living relationship with God.

Music, Dance & Expression

Music and dance are inseparable from Zimbabwean tradition. They are beyond entertainment, they are languages of expression.

Drumming, singing, and instruments like the marimba bring people together in rhythm and unity. Each performance tells a story, marks an occasion, or honours a moment in life. Dance, often energetic and symbolic, reflects both joy and meaning from celebration to spiritual ritual.

This isn’t just music, it’s confidence, culture, and community through rhythm
